Siena and the Maremma

The road is not very busy . Uncovered from Montaione to Colle Val d'Elsa, among the vineyards , and then again over Colle. It closes in the woods and becomes narrow crossing the Sienese hills, the chain of hills which separates the Val d'Elsa from Siena. From here you take the old road to the Maremma. Do not hesitate to stop at the Pia’s Bridge (mentioned by Dante), an old Roman bridge over the river Rosia. Then continue towards the sea. Stop at San Galgano, very impressive ruins of a Benedictine abbey. And finally, Massa Marittima. You can return to Montaione through the area of geysers in the ancient salt road.
